Understanding Affiliate Marketing for Good
We are introducing ourselves and the value we serve to both consumers and businesses through a special program we like to call Affiliate Marketing for Good, which takes advantage of the affiliate marketing system that has grown popular over the past two decades.
For those who don’t know, we see affiliate marketing when influencers post sponsored content, or when a blog article includes links to relevant products or services, or when sustainability rating platforms like Good On You give you an easy way to both learn about and shop from better-for-the-world fashion brands in one stop.
Companies gift these marketers a commission as a thank-you for their promotional activities by providing eligible candidates a special link to share on their platforms, and that special link is what will help track their sales. Through our program, however, companies won’t be paying us a commission — not exactly, at least.
Instead, 100% of the commissions we earn from our affiliate links will be returned to those companies as sustainability funds. Of course, there will be measures in place to ensure that companies are redeeming these funds and utilizing them properly and transparently.
Through this program, we begin to accomplish several things aligned with our mission:
Customers can begin maximizing the positive impact of every purchase they make by communicating their desire to support that company’s sustainable future.
Companies can begin putting a real number to how much their customers care about their environmental and social impacts.
Companies can begin advertising their interest in sustainability even before making any risky investments or shortcuts.
Companies can begin experimenting with the market to find their unique role in our sustainable future.
Here’s what we mean by experiment:
Companies can choose to attach a certain goal or challenge to excite customers into shopping with them. So, a company could promise that a certain number of sales or a certain amount of commissions, raised through our link within a certain amount of time, will be honored by a certain action. They could, for example:
promise to donate to a cause.
promise to measure and publish their impacts.
promise to raise their lowest tier of wages by $1.
promise to make the switch to plastic-free packaging.
promise to force all their executives to go out and kiss a tree.
So, we encourage companies to really get creative with this and figure out what will excite their target markets. Plus, the more exciting the challenge, the more likely EC will put a lot of effort into promoting it on social media.
Lastly, here is some information about redeeming these funds.
One thing for companies to note, before we get into the possibilities, is that there may be minor processing fees that take a couple percents off of the commissions we return.
It is important to us that we are raising sustainability budgets, and not replacing it. So, we may request documentation from larger companies to confirm the proper use of these funds. This can be easily verified by any sustainability consultant or auditor that might already be working with that company. We will provide a list of activities and businesses that are exempt from proving this requirement. One such activity is redeeming these funds in the form of a subscription to our platform.
We will provide all these details and more in a simple contract for any companies interested in taking advantage of our program, but for those who do not actively sign up to participate in this program (ie. we acquire an affiliate partnership, but the company treats us like any other affiliate marketer), we will hold these commissions as potential funds until requested otherwise.
So, whether or not a company understands the purpose behind our affiliate marketing service, customers will still be able to raise sustainability funds for those companies directly with each purchase.
Finally, we re-emphasize the fact that this is an introductory campaign for raising awareness around our mission. We do not intend to take over the original objective of the affiliate marketing system, and plan to deprioritize this system once we perfect our main product and grow our user base. We hope you enjoy this stage in our movement in the meantime!
